Canning from garden harvest

Garden before rebuild - 2020

The photo of last year’s garden before the deer got at it.

In prior years her garden was exposed to the wildlife. Last year’s count of uninvited guests was 14 deer and they devastated the garden. Patty says, “I had all kinds of noisemakers and soap, twine and a camera. It was comedic, but still didn’t matter.”

Patty has had enough of garden destruction and is “ready to take on the deer and rabbits this year.” In early spring, she ordered the Garden Defender kits, hardwood mulch and lumber locally.

With her husband, her son, and herself, the following photos show the progress of building a protected garden. It took four or five weekends to complete as they all work fulltime. The garden upgrade now has the fence resting on 6″ x 6″s with 4″ x 4″ x 4′ upright supports.

Inside it has six raised beds also surrounded by mulch with ample room for care and harvesting.  An arbor and double gate are at the entrance. Outside the fencing she grows squash as the deer “don’t like the furry leaves.”

Patty has an auto-sprinkler which waters twice a day for 20 minutes. She notes her husband doesn’t garden – he only reaps the benefits of home-grown fresh and canned results.

Future plans call for a strawberry tower, pea trestle and a little bistro table and chairs. These are still in design mode. (TBD: who mixes and serves the Strawberry Daiquiris.)

This is one of a few garden builds that we have seen documented. We are more than impressed with the results. We look forward to seeing her harvests this summer and fall. We hope this is a great season for all customers!

On Patty’s Facebook page she posted, “Love this product! I am ready to take on the deer and rabbits this year. This is 2 kits and an extension. My garden is 18′ x 26′ with a double gate under the arbor.”

“Bob, I just want to thank you for a wonderful product. We have completed our garden and it is more than I could have imagined. Thanks for your help. It went together exactly as you explain in your email. I appreciated the other feedback on your site, since I, too, added 6 x 6 for the base and added 4 x 4 supports with a double gate. Enjoy Gardening, I know, I love to play in the dirt!”
